New From TSE’s Family of Companies: Shot Defender™

You make ballistic protection, we’ll make it better.

Polyurethane Elastomer Resin Chemistry

Polyurethane chemistry enhances the effectiveness of Shot Defender™ by providing a lightweight yet robust addition to existing ballistic systems, significantly improving their stopping power. Polyurethanes are known for their versatility and can be engineered to possess excellent mechanical properties such as high tear resistance, impact resistance, and flexibility, making them ideal for ballistic applications

Projectile Stopping Ability

Shot Defender™ demonstrates exceptional ballistic resistance, offering protection against a wide range of projectiles. When used as a standalone solution, this resin system effectively neutralizes threats from handguns. However, its true potential is unlocked when integrated with complementary defense systems. By combining Shot Defender™ with other advanced protective technologies, the overall stopping power is dramatically amplified.

Optically Clear Versions Available Soon!

Our optically clear 70D variant is currently undergoing rigorous field testing to ensure its superior performance and durability. Following this phase, it will be subjected to comprehensive UV testing to evaluate its resistance to sunlight and other environmental factors. We anticipate receiving the results early in 2026, which will provide valuable insights into the product’s long-term reliability and effectiveness. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to enhance our offerings to meet your needs.

40D Hardness Variation

In the early 2000’s TSE, Inc. formulated a resin with a shore hardness of 40D at the request of one of its customers. With the addition of 40D to the customer’s product they were able to make panels that would stop light arms penetration as well as mitigate shrapnel and spalling.

As seen pictured (.45 cal and 9mm penetrations), the resin has stopping power of its own, but is most useful when combined with another ballistic system.

70D Hardness Variation

Recently, there has been a requirement for a system that relies more heavily on the resin’s stopping power; this is when the 70D shore hardness version was born. A shift in chemical make up was needed to get improved stopping power and elongation characteristics.

The improved capabilities of the 70D resin can be seen when comparing the 40D picture to the 70D picture. The 9mm round in the 40D penetrated 3 1/4″ while the 9mm rounds in the 70D only penetrated 1″.

70D Performance

70D has demonstrated excellent standalone ballistic protection in preliminary testing. A target casting pictured below from the side, was shot with 230gr .45ACP FMJ. The round was not successful in full penetration. As such, due to some rounds being rejected, any testing with this product needs to be undertaken by professionals using extreme caution.

Pictured below is 70D hardness Shot Defender™ sample coupled with 1/8″ inexpensive cast PPMA (poly methyl methacrylate), three 9mm 124gr rounds were completely rejected. Also in picture is a .44 magnum round stopped in just 70D Shot Defender™.
